Fishing Reports

This is the Fishing Report for August 26, 2010 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling 218.847.5743 or 1.800.433.1888.

The Detroit Lakes area just came through some severe cold fronts and will now have a brief warming trend. Lake temps have dropped about 8 degrees in the last few days and are around 70 degrees now.

The full moon has been very good for the night crankers for walleye. Fish the flats in 6-12ft of water with shad baits or minnow imitators. The daytime bite is more productive in the early am or dusk; 9-14ft on mid-lake is still producing. Minnows are starting to be the preferred bait. Otter Tail and Cormorant lakes have been the best late-night trolling lakes and daytime lakes have been Cotton, Big Detroit, Pelican, White Earth, and Big and Little Pine Lakes.

Muskie action is still the pitching bite on Detroit Lake and Pelican Lake. Bass are on deeper weed edges during the day and jigs and sucker minnows are working. Cotton, Detroit Lake, Melissa, Floyd, the McDonalds, and both Long Lakes are turning fish. Northern action has been sporadic. Sallie and Melissa lakes are always good bets to increase your odds. Pay attention to the slot limits on both lakes.

Watch the weather close over the next week. We are due for more thunderstorms and significant fronts as we start to transition to fall.
