Northwoods Trail Riders
Trail report for 01/17/2026
Our neck of the woods received an additional 2-3 inches this week. Trails are in good condition for riding; some open areas (ditches & fields) are still a little thin with snow. Our base on the 400 north and 300 / 200 trails have between 3-5 inches currently. The snow is holding tight in the wooded areas. It should be a great weekend to get out and ride our trail system. We have groomed the following trails this week.
400 South – Was groomed on 1/12 from Cotton Lake, Height of Land Lake, Island Lake to Ice Cracking Lodge
300 & 200 West – Was groomed on 1/16 from Ice Cracking Lodge, Rat Lake, Tulaby Lake, Mary Yellowhead, White Earth Lake to Strawberry Lake.
400 North – Was groomed on 01/17 From Ice Cracking Lodge, Little Bemidji Lake to E. Elbow Lake.

CROSS COUNTRY SKI UPDATES, January 10, 2026 from Detroit Lakes Area Nordic Ski Club
Mt View – groomed Sat., Jan. 3rd, have had walkers over there up to “B” Loop. It will get freshened up this weekend.
Tamarac Refuge – groomed yesterday, Jan. 9th – excellent trails! Pine Lake Road skimpy in some places but no gravel showing.
Pickerel Lake – groomed two weeks ago, and not enough snow to groom it again, so we are leaving it as-is. Good skiing overall – Logging Road, East and West Perimeter trails have all been groomed.
Detroit Mountain – groomed frequently, and is fantastic skiing, East and West Loops, Lighted Trail, and base of Tubing Hill. Trail passes are at: https://www.detroitmountain.com
Dunton Locks County Park – Kent groomed it last Tuesday, Jan. 6th, and is in great shape!
Frazee Trails – groomed Thursday, Jan. 1st. Snow is skimpy in some places, and we need more snow to groom again. Trails are in reasonably good shape.
Rainbow Resort and Maplelag – Check out their websites for trail updates. Rainbow https://www.rainbowresort.com is free, and Maplelag https://www.maplelag.com has on-line trail passes.

Rainbow Resort: 6km Classic/Skate, and 3km Skate are ready to ski.
DATE: 01/21 /26 CONDITIONS: Light snow showers overnight and this morning. South Trail combed, packed and track set; 3k classic trail combed, packed, and track set over 3” of new snow accumulated over this past weekend; North trail covered roll pack with 3” of powder snow. Average base depth 6” and deck is semi firm. Bring your Good skis. COMMENTS: We started this morning at 5*, foggy skis and then snow showers on and off as we groomed the fresh snow cover. Had a few drifts here and there from the gusty winds this past weekend. Trails look great! http://www.rainbowresort.com
Maplelag Resort January 22: Trails are open. Today looks to be the coldest day of the week, weekend and possibly winter! With wind ushering in colder air there definitely is a bite. Not saying we can’t Just Ski but offering insight. The air temp looks to be colder on Friday but if no wind and the sun is shining, to us it “feels” better to be in the woods. Regardless, we are going about our day. We will hold off on grooming until later this afternoon once the wind lays down. Most recent grooming late afternoon on Sap Run, Sukkerbusk, Twin Lakes, JibFly and Mother Hen. These trails recommended for classic skiing. Skaters Waltz was rolled in the morning and afternoon yesterday and best bet for those taking on skating. Other trails were skied in after being groomed yesterday. We have also have a loop on Little Sugarbush Lake “Lumi’s Loop” with a skate lane and track on each side. This is a fun 1.2km loop that makes for a fun ski at sunrise and sunset. 34″ of snow so far this season. We have been grooming daily on the entire trail system since mid-November, only missing a few days. Trail reports at: https://maplelag.com
