Visit Detroit Lakes! Tour Suggestion #2

Visit beautiful Detroit Lakes and experience the blending of lakes, prairie and woodlands, art and culture.

9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
We begin the day by way of the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail to visit Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge. Look for several species of birds in wetland and grassland habitats.

11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon
We head back to Detroit Lakes, with a stop at Dunton Locks County Park. It's a good opportunity to walk around the scenic grounds next to Muskrat Lake and Lake Sallie. See where a tram transports watercraft from lake to lake and observe the interpretive signs explaining the transformation of the lock and dam system to the backfilling of boulders to allow for fish passage.

12:00 noon - 4:00 p.m.
We return to Detroit Lakes for lunch, then spend the afternoon on our own to leisure-shop many of the retail stores. Pick up a map of "Sunny in DL." Gather family or friends for a group photo with your favorite of the 35 hand-decorated sunfish sculptures throughout the city!

4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
We spend some time at our room, then head out for fine dining at one of Detroit Lakes' fine restaurants. After dinner, we end the day with a relaxing cruise by pontoon around Detroit Lakes. Fresh air and a breath-taking sunset conclude our day in Detroit lakes.

Day 2 - 9:00 a.m.
After an evening at our rooms, we head out along the Lake Country Scenic Byway on Highway 34 east. Our final stop is at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. We'll be treated to a diversity of vegetation, as this is the transition zone between tallgrass prairie, northern hardwood, and coniferous ecosystems. We make a stop at the Visitor Center then a refuge ranger steps on as our tour guide to point out the many wildlife and migratory bird sightings. A delightful exit from our visit to Detroit Lakes!
